AAP to offer affiliate membership to NP's!

Posted over 9 years ago by Karen Kilian

I imagine there are folks out there who would love to receive the journal "Pediatrics", one of the journals that the AAP manages.  However, when recently investigating the possibility of becoming a member of AAP, it was quite surprising to find that NP's were not allowed to be members of AAP (however, PA's could be....interestingly).  So, when I saw this on the Rocky Mtn Chapter of NAPNAP, I will freely admit I have copied and pasted to our website...as the content was all there and full of great information.  I think it's interesting that we have to be "sponsored", like membership is some sort of secret society...but..it would mean we could receive journals and information that is relevant to our practice.

Members of the American Academy Pediatrics (AAP) recently voted to approve a bylaw change noting "...recruitment of NPs will proceed through AAP physician members and their practices. A FAAP will be required to sponsor the NP and attest that he or she is working on a pediatric care team that includes a pediatrician. AAP Fellows also will have the right to petition for removal of an NP as a member if it is discovered and verified that he or she no longer works on a recognized pediatric team." (AAP News 2014;35;1) The affiliate members cannot vote.

Although AAP has not announced how it might market the affiliate membership to NPs, NAPNAP's leaders have been in contact with colleagues at AAP regarding the change in AAP's membership rules related to nurse practitioners. Both organizations are committed to providing their members the highest level of benefits and services. NAPNAP is investigating possible membership offerings that will benefit members of both associations. NAPNAP and AAP are committed to maintaining a collaborative relationship, support for continuing education, advocacy and other efforts.
